OGDEN, Utah — Southern Utah freshman Chanikan (Pluem) Yongyuan has earned Women’s Golfer of the Week honors from the Big Sky Conference following her individual title at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic. Her performance was highlighted by a second-round 63. She shared the award with Eastern Washington’s Alexa Clark.

After carding a 76 in her opening round, she was able to bounce back strong and shoot up the leaderboard. Yongyuan had two eagles, four birdies and nothing below a par for the entire round. Her score is believed to be a Hobble Creek Fall Classic single-round record, as well as the women’s course record.

Yongyuan scored a 71 in the third and final round, bringing her three-day total to three-under 210 (76, 63, 71). She won the tournament by one stroke, closely followed by Hannah Alberto from Sam Houston State, who shot a 211.

“Pluem performing like this in her first college tournament is really a sign of what we’re hoping her career can be here at Southern Utah,” SUU head coach Richard Church said. “She’s incredibly talented and we’re really looking forward to having her here for the next two four years.”

Next up for Pluem and the T-Birds will be the 2018 University of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California.
