SUU Men’s Golf Finishes The Bill Cullum In Ninth

SIMI VALLEY, California – The Thunderbird men’s golf team wrapped up play at the Bill Cullum Invitational on Tuesday with Fidel Concepcion taking second place.

After shooting a 580 (290,290) on Monday SUU has a 294 on Tuesday to help the Thunderbirds claim a ninth place finish.  

“Fidel finished the fall season strong with three rounds of 68-67-69, including a hole-in-one in today's round,capping off a second place finish in the tournament,” SUU head coach Richard Church said about his top golfers finish in the tournament. 

Concepcion finished the tournament shooting a 204 to take second place behind Jonah Texeira of USC who shot a 202.

SUU had five other athletes in the tournament, one of which competing as an individual. Freshman Brodey Payzant was the next best finisher for the Thunderbirds, in a tie for 48th shooting a 220. Bradley Collet (72,75,76) was tied for 60th place, with Ali Hameed right behind him shooting a 227 to tie for 76th place. Jake Vincent rounded out the scoring for the Thunderbirds shooting a 232, landing him in 83rd place.

Humza Hameed competed as an individual in the Bill Cullum, claiming a 92nd place finish with a score of 265.

UC Santa Barbara took the tournament as a team, shooting a 833, with the next closest finishers being UC Irvine who ended the tournament with a score of 849.

Southern Utah golfer Fidel Concepcion did well in last season's Bill Collum Invitational, hosted by Cal State Northridge, winning the tournament. Concepcion followed up his stellar 2015 performance with another strong finish, taking the runner-up spot in the tourney. Concepcion shot rounds of 68-67-69, finishing with a 204 (-12) at the par-72 Wood Ranch Golf Club.
