By Bryson Lester, Director of Strategic Communication at Southern Utah University

MANSFIELD, Texas — The Thunderbird women’s golf team wrapped up their Fall Season on Tuesday afternoon, finishing in third place at the UT Arlington Invitational at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Chanikan (Pluem) Yongyuan was the top performer for the Thunderbirds, finishing in a tie for third shooting a 219 (72, 74, 73). With that finish, Yongyuan secured at least a top-four finish in every event the T-Birds participated in so far this season.

Both Kamonwan (Poy) Prasurtwong (78, 74, 76) and Launa Wilson (79, 77, 72) finished in a tie for 16th on the leaderboard for the Thunderbirds, carding a 228. Kyla Smith finished just two shots behind the duo, shooting a 230 (76, 79, 75).

Lindsay Aleman rounded out SUU’s scoring team, carding a 249 (84, 85, 80).

The T-Birds shot their low round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding a 296 to end play at 905 (305, 304, 296).

Of Southern Utah’s three individuals play in the field, Tori Thomas had the best tournament carding a 242 (80, 81, 81). Lexi Hamel finished play with a 253 (82, 86, 85) and Averi Stover shot a 285 (105, 96, 84).

“Overall we had a fairly impressive Fall Season,” SUU head coach Richard Church said. “There are some things we need to improve on once the Spring rolls around, but I think we’re in a good position moving into the rest of the schedule.”

South Alabama (890) claimed the team title, while Arkansas State (898) finished as runners up.

Playing as an individual from Sam Houston State, Jenna Phillips secured the individual title shooting a 215 (72, 76, 67).

The Lady T-Birds will return to the course on February 23 when they compete in the 2019 GCU Invitational in Glendale, Arizona.
