By Bryson Lester, Director of Strategic Communication for Southern Utah University
SPRINGVILLE, Utah — Thunderbird freshman Chanikan (Pluem) Yongyuan claimed a victory in her first ever NCAA women’s golf tournament on Tuesday, as she claimed the individual title at the 2018 Hobble Creek Fall Classic hosted by Utah Valley University.
Yongyuan scored a 71 in the third and final round, bringing her three-day total to three-under 210 (76, 63, 71) one day removed from setting the women’s course record at Hobble Creek Golf Club. She won the tournament by one stroke, closely followed by Hannah Alberto from Sam Houston State, who shot a 211.
“We’re incredibly proud of Pluem and the way she performed the last two days,” SUU head coach Richard Church said. “For her to start her career this way is a great sign of what's to come during her time as a Thunderbird.”
Finishing second for the Thunderbirds was Kamonwan (Poy) Prasurtwong, who shot back-to-back 71’s to close out the tournament on Monday and Tuesday. Prasutwong finished with a 224 (82, 71, 71) to finish in 18th place.
