Howe’s Final Round Move
Howe’s Final Round Move
By Randy Dodson
Former champion Dan Horner, high-school rival Cole Ponich and Colton Dallimore had a one point lead after opening round play in the Winterchamps Men’s 1 Flight competition at Bloomington Country Club but with his 43 points Connor Howe was in a good position to make a move.
With strong winds and cold temperatures at SunRiver Golf Club, Howe’s 41 final round points – the highest point total on a day that required some extra concentration – drove him past some of the biggest names in Utah golf, right to the winner’s circle. With a total of 84 Modified Stableford points, Howe was handed the Winterchamps champion’s medal, adding a boost of confidence to the George Tech commit.
“It’s definitely a good win. It’s good to get a win. My game wasn’t were I wanted it to be last year so I’ve been working over the winter to get it back with my coach, Boyd Summerhays,” said Howe.
Ponich finished with 80 points in his runner-up effort while Dallimore captured third with 78 points. Horner, last year’s UGA Mid-Amateur champion and Tanner Higham rounded out the top 5 tied with 76 points.
Howe will be dividing his tournament playing time between Utah and national events this season and will miss the Utah State Amateur due to his national playing schedule.
