Ogden Golf & Country Club’s very own Connor Howe fought tooth and nail in his Round of 32 match versus Dixie State’s Kenny You. Still, You, the No. 16 seed following stroke play qualifying, advanced after defeating Jack Sargent 3&1 in the Round of 64. You was up on Howe a majority of the match until Howe turned things around. The competitors were all square for holes 15 through 18 to move on to extra holes. You finally closed out the match after 25 holes by making birdie on the par-3 No. 7.
Defending Champion Patrick Fishburn made his Round of 32 match against 2007 Utah State Amateur Champion Nick Nelson look like a walk in the park. Fishburn easily dismissed the anxieties that come with competing against fellow past champions and advanced with the 5&4 win over Nelson.
Also in contention, No. 1 seed Braydon Swapp defeated Robert Mitchell (33) 2&1 to advance to Thursday afternoon’s Round of 16 against Kenny You. Swapp had a slow start and was as many as three down through seven holes; after winning No. 8 and then 11 and 12 back to back, the match returned to all square. From there, Swapp won 14, 16 and 17 to win the match 2&1.
