By: Bryan Lester, Assistant Director of Strategic Communications SUU

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Thunderbird women’s golf team used a 288 team score to climb up the leaderboard at the Bobcat Desert Invitational on Tuesday, and finished the event in third place.

The 288 SUU scored on Tuesday was just one away from tying the record-low the team has ever shot, which was set earlier this season at the Battle at Boulder Creek. The mark brought SUU’s team score to 906 (303, 315, 288).

The 288 was also the lowest single-round score at the event.

The Thunderbirds were led by Taylor Viquelia, who tied her career-low by shooting a four-under 68 on Tuesday. Viquelia previously shot a 68 in the 2015 Big Sky Championships. She had six birdies on Tuesday to bring her three-round total to 222 (76, 78, 68) and finish in a tie for seventh on the leaderboard.

Viquelia’s 68 was also the lowest single-round score posted at the Desert Invitational.

Miranda Reyes finished in a tie for 11th overall and second for the Thunderbirds after closing the event with an even 72. Over the two days she shot a 224 (74, 78, 72).

Poy Prasurtwong ended play in a tie for 18th overall and third for SUU after shooting a 227 (74, 78, 75). Nicole Jones shot a one-over 73 on Tuesday to end up in a tie for 29th and finish the event fourth for SUU with a 233 (79, 81, 73).

Kyla Smith was fifth for SUU after shooting a 76 on Tuesday to bring her three-round total to 236 (79, 83, 76).

Cal Poly was able to win the event, shooting 878 (291, 290, 297) as a unit. They also had the top player on the leaderboard, as Sophie Bergland finished the event with a 212 (70, 72, 70).

Up next the Thunderbirds will head to Boulder City, Nevada, to compete for the 2017 Big Sky Conference Championship. That event is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 21st.
