Nyhus Takes Second Senior Amateur Title

Sue Nyhus captured her second career Utah Women’s Senior Amateur victory at Hobble Creek Golf Course during a two-day event on August 22-23 that saw some of the best senior women golfers in Utah. Coming into the tournament with high expectations, as she was one of the heavy favorites to take home the trophy, Nyhus won by four strokes with a two-day total of 153.
Nyhus is no stranger to success on the golf course. She broke the USGA’s record of competing in every USGA Championship in which she is eligible and has advanced past the qualifying round to the tournament in USGA Junior, Women’s and Senior Women’s amateur categories. This year, Nyhus and her daughter, Kim, won the 2016 Utah Women’s Four-Ball Championship. She also serves as the coach for the Utah Valley University Women’s Golf Team.
Following her victory at Hobble Creek, Nyhus’s fellow competitors persuaded her to give a short speech during which she stated the following, “I dedicate this win to Gwen Adams, Jeff Smith, and Joyce Billings,” expressed Nyhus.“Our competition amongst the senior women is fantastic. We, as a group, are getting better and better, and I encourage each one of you to step out of your comfort zone and start competing at the national level” said Nyhus. “I’ve been there, and I’m telling you, you can compete there. I know how you play; you’re good enough to compete there. Get out there and do it”
Other notable performances include runner up Elizabeth Jones who shot a second-round 76, which was tied for low round of the tournament. 2015 Champion Annette Gaiotti finished in third place and was one of only two players (Nyhus) to score both rounds in the 70s.
