New Utah Golf Association Championships to Launch in 2024

August 9, 2023, Salt Lake City, Utah – On behalf of the Utah Golf Association (UGA) Board of Directors, Executive Director Easton Folster announced the creation of two new events to provide a championship experience for its junior members.

Folster said, “The UGA’s junior membership represents nearly 14% of our total membership and has experienced rapid growth over the last few years, including a 15% increase in just the last year. A large part of the UGA’s mission is to conduct high-level championships. The time has come for us to run junior championships for both boys and girls.”

The junior events will be called the UGA Utah Girls’ Junior State Amateur Championship and the UGA Utah Junior State Amateur Championship.

Wasatch Mountain State Park’s Wasatch Mountain Golf Course has partnered with the UGA as the host venue for both championships which will be played June 15th, 2024, as an 18-hole stroke play qualifying round followed by the match play portion of the championships, June 17-19. The match play segment of the championships will feature a 32-player bracket for the boys and 16-player bracket for the girls.

“We all are very excited to be hosting the UGA Utah Junior Championships. This park has a long history of hosting UGA championships. We have a wonderful working relationship with the UGA, and we are delighted that this partnership is going to continue to expand. The UGA Utah Junior Amateur Championships (boys’ and girls’) reflect the growth of Utah junior golf and a pathway to provide opportunities for young people to enjoy competitive golf,” said Bret Weston, Wasatch Mountain Golf Course Head Professional.

Wasatch Mountain State Park Director of Golf Operations Nathan James said, “This will be a fantastic event and is truly an honor. Championship golf courses like Wasatch Mountain Golf Course create the perfect stage for talented young golfers to showcase their skills.”

The winner and runner-up of the boys’ championship will be presented with an exemption into the UGA’s Utah State Amateur Championship, with the winner also receiving an exemption into the Utah Section PGA’s annual Utah Open Championship. Both boys’ and girls’ champions will receive an invite to represent the UGA on its annual Governor’s Cup and Goddard Cup teams.

“The UGA is excited to announce these two new championships beginning in 2024,” said UGA President Mike Bailey. “We are excited to continue to grow the game of golf in the state by offering these new championships that will serve our junior golf membership.”
