By Brett Rubash, UGA Boatwright Intern
Governor’s Cup
Each year, the Utah Section PGA and the UGA compete in a Ryder Cup-style event named the Governor’s Cup. On August 12, the 2016 edition of the Governor’s Cup was held at Hidden Valley Country Club. This year’s Governor’s Cup was the first in history to ever need a playoff to determine the winner. In the end, it was the UGA amateurs who came out with the win for the third straight year after a five-hole sudden death playoff.
The format of the event starts in the morning with foursomes playing alternate shot. Following those matches are the afternoon four-ball and single matches. Each team consists of 12 players and four seniors.
After the morning matches were played, the score stood even at 4-4. Following the final afternoon matches, the score was tied again 16-16. Each team then chose two players to compete in a sudden death four-ball match.
The UGA chose 2016 State Amateur Champion Patrick Fishburn and U.S. Amateur qualifier Brandon Kida to face Davis Park PGA Professional Zach Johnson and Golf Lab PGA Professional Tommy Sharp.
It took five holes for Fishburn and Kida to bring the Governor’s Cup to the UGA for the third consecutive year.
Goddard Cup
The third annual Goddard Cup was held on August 11th at Alpine Country Club. The Ryder Cup style event features women and senior women who have earned their way into the competition via the UGA Women’s Player Performance Rankings (WPPR).
This friendly competition follows a format that includes a foursome segment (alternate shot) and four-ball matches over 36 holes. Each match won earns their respective team one point. Tied matches are worth .5 points.
After the morning foursome matches, Team Black led 2-1. In the afternoon session, Team Cherry Tomato stormed back by winning seven of the possible nine points. Team Cherry Tomato took home the Goddard Cup by an overall score of 8-4.
Sirene Blair and Carly Dehlin led the field by earning 3.5 points for the victorious Team Cherry Tomato. Liz Jones and Patricia Smith proved to be the standouts for Team Black by winning 2 points for the team.
