Singh, Lillywhite advance to U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur

Bonneville Golf Course, the home of the City Amateur and Salt Lake City Open, played host to this year’s U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur Qualifier, teeing off a few hours ahead of the U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier.

The early morning tee times were buffeted by strong winds and cooler temperatures as 24 girls under the age of 19 teed off playing for just two qualifying spots.

Shyla Singh, the current New South Wales (Australia) Amateur champion, grabbed the top spot with an even par round of 72. After three bogeys in her first seven holes, the 16-year old playing out of the private Southport Golf Club in Queensland, turned her game around with a birdie on the par 3 9th hole. She added three more birdies against just one bogey on her final nine holes. Singh is in Utah visiting extended family.

Timpview High’s Emma Lillywhite, who plays out of Riverside Country Club in Provo, will join Singh at the United States Air Force Academy’s Eisenhower Golf Club (Blue Course) as today’s runner-up and second qualifier. Lillywhite turned in a 4-over 76.

“The wind made the course play much longer than it already was,” Lillywhite said.

The round was “a big guessing game,” the incoming senior said. “There were even times when I wasn’t sure I had the right club in my hands.”

Ali Mulhall and Ashley Lam both carded rounds of (+7) 79 to fill the alternate spots.

Lillywhite said, “I don’t think the full realization of qualifying has hit me yet. I have never been to this particular tournament, but I am very excited because I love match play.”

The U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur will be played July 17-22, 2023.
