Utah Women’s Senior State Amateur offers a competitive championship match at Bonneville GC

At age 69,Annette Gaiotti shows no signs of slowing down, adding a 7th Utah Golf Association senior title to her career win column.

Annette Gaiotti started the week by shooting her age and ended it by producing another ageless performance in the Utah Senior Women’s State Amateur.

And now she’s positioned to challenge a Utah Golf Association record for the ages.

Gaiotti’s 69 in the stroke-play portion of the tournament and her 1-up defeat of Melanie Christensen in Thursday’s final match at Bonneville Golf Course added to her impressive run in 20 years of eligibility.

With her seventh senior title, Gaiotti can target Bev Nelson’s eight victories in the Women’s State Amateur, the most in any single UGA event.

“My casual golf’s pretty sloppy,” Gaiotti said, “but I can really focus when I have to. … I always play better when I’m down.”

That would require winning in her 70s against golfers such as Kareen Larson, who will turn 50 in 2023, although Gaiotti shows no signs of slowing down. The Park City resident had lost in the Senior Am semifinals each of the previous two years, but she won the last two holes to beat defending champion Roberta Scott and then outlasted Christensen in a tight duel that resulted in only five holes being won and lost all day.

“It’s still exciting that I’m able to come out here and compete,” Gaiotti said, “and I love it.”
