Randy Hicken finishes as medalist at U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier

Randy Hicken +1 (73) narrowly beat out playing partner Dana Nelson +2 (74) to finish as medalist at the U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier at The Country Club. Hicken and Nelson claimed the two qualifying spots as they battled rainy conditions all day. This was the first time that either player had qualified for this event and both were thrilled.

“Dana and I were definitely pushing each other,” said Hicken, “We’ve played a lot together and are good friends. We fed off each other and had good camaraderie and that helps a lot when you get to play with someone like that.”

Hicken and Nelson’s friendship was evident as Hicken followed along to support and watch as Nelson battled in a two-hole playoff with Rod Skyles +2 (74) for the final qualifying spot. Nelson is a familiar face at UGA events but was ecstatic to be able to qualify for his first ever USGA event.

“This is a really big deal for me,” said Nelson, “I’ve been trying to qualify for USGA events since I was 18 or 19 years old! First one!”

The U.S. Senior Amateur will be played at the Country Club of Detroit from August 28 to September 2.
