Utah State Amateur: Making Memories

It was a day of comebacks at remarkable rallies at Alpine Country Club as Thursday’s match play rounds determined Friday’s Quarterfinalists.

Carl Jensen confidently approached Alpine Country Club’s No. 16 tee, preparing to hit the most important, desperate golf shot in his three-plus decades of playing the course. He turned to his caddie, Alpine Head Professional Brock Padilla, and said, “Let’s go make some memories.”

And then Jensen proceeded to do exactly that over the next three holes, winning them with two birdies and a par and somehow salvaging a 1-up victory over Jake Godfrey in Thursday’s round of 16 in the 123rd Utah State Amateur Championship.

That was just enough to earn him Co-Story of the Round honors, thanks to what Dan Horner, another golfer in his early 40s, did about an hour later. Horner won Nos. 17, 18 and 19 with an eagle, birdie and par to overtake BYU golfer David Timmins.
