Rand Sargent and Westminster College’s Masen Ward tie for low medalist at Stonebridge Qualifier

Rand Sargent -4 (68) and Westminster Senior Masen Ward -4 (68) tied for low medalist at the Utah State Amateur Qualifier at Stonebridge Golf Club. After making double bogey on the first hole, Sargent had three birdies in his next four holes to get in a good rhythm and ended up finishing the round without another hole over par.

On the other hand, Ward got off to a hot start with a 32 on the front nine. At one point, Ward had four birdies in a row. Sargent mentioned that watching Ward play so well was motivating for him and helped get him back in the round.

“On the back nine, I knew that Masen was a couple ahead of me,” said Sargent, “He rolled in some putts and then I rolled in some putts. I think seeing putts go in like that gives the whole group confidence.”

Ward agreed with Sargent’s sentiment and enjoyed the friendly competition. He said that initially his mentality was to take it easy and just try to qualify. However, he said that it was fun to get pushed and battle with Sargent down the stretch for low medalist.

Ward and Sargent have both played in the State Am before and made it to match play. Both have their sights set on making a deep run and are looking forward to playing at Thanksgiving Point Golf Course and Alpine Country Club.

The cut came at +4 (76) with 23 players qualifying for the State Amateur in July.
