University of Utah sophomore Oscar Maxfield takes medalist honors at qualifier at The Ridge

Oscar Maxfield -6 (66) turned in an impressive round to finish as medalist at the Utah State Amateur Qualifier at The Ridge Golf Club. Maxfield, who will be playing in his second State Amateur, felt like he could have had an even better day. There were several putts that he barely missed that could have pushed his score into the low 60’s.

“The longest putt I made all day was five feet. I was hitting greens but couldn’t make any long ones,” said Maxfield, “I’ve been cold lately on the green. Normally, if I hit it as well as I did today, I could go really low. I had back-to-back 15-foot putts for eagle, three different 10-foot putts for birdie and one five-foot putt for birdie that I missed.”

Maxfield now sets his sights on making it to the match play portion of the State Amateur. The last time he played, he was coming off a recent injury and did not play as well. He feels like he has a chance to contend this year with how well he is playing.

Meanwhile, 9 players finished at +2 (74) to force a playoff for six qualifying spots. It only took 3 holes to be able to cut the field down to six qualifiers, two alternates and one left on the outside looking in. The cut came at +2 (74) with 23 players qualifying for the State Amateur in July.
