Nik Parcell survives 5-person playoff for final spot at Park City Qualifier

It took 3 holes for Nik Parcell to come out on top of a 5-person playoff for the final spot at the Utah State Amateur Qualifier at Park City Golf Club. After all 5 players made par on the first hole, 2 players made par, 2 made bogey and 1 had a double bogey on the second hole to narrow it down to two remaining players. At that point, Parcell tapped into his experiences playing in the State Am as well as a previous playoff in order to claim the final spot.

I was in a playoff at Bonneville 4 or 5 years ago and I lost, so I had a different mindset going in this time,” recalled Parcell, “On the last hole, I saw my opponent go left of the green, so I decided to play it conservative and just hit the middle of the green instead of going for the pin and it paid off.”

15-year-old phenom Preston Cheney, playing out of Willow Creek CC and Jordan High School, shot -1 (70) to earn low medalist honors and qualify for the State Amateur for a second consecutive year.

The cut came at +8 (80) with 23 players qualifying for the State Amateur in July. Having familiarity with the course proved to be an advantage as 6 of the qualifying players all call Park City GC as their home course.
