Yongyuan Becomes SUU’s First Women’s Golfer To Qualify For NCAA Regionals

CEDAR CITY, Utah — For the first time in the history of the women’s golf program at Southern Utah University, a Thunderbird will be making an appearance at NCAA Regionals as Chanikan (Pluem) Yongyuan will be extending her season to continue a phenomenal freshman campaign.

She will be playing in the Cle Elum Regional hosted by the University of Washington at Tumble Creek Golf Club.

“This is really an exciting day for golf at Southern Utah,” SUU head coach Richard Church said. “Pluem deserves this opportunity and we’re so happy for her.”

With two individual victories and eight top-10 finishes under her belt, Yongyuan is currently rewriting the record book for Southern Utah University.

She also took the Big Sky Conference by storm, racking up five Women’s Golfer of the Week awards which tied a record set in 2004-05 by Portland State’s Sarah Tiller.

Yongyuan was also named Big Sky Freshman of the Year and to the league’s All-Conference First Team ahead of the Big Sky Championships. Additionally, she earned the title of Zions Bank Champion of the Month from the Utah Golf Association.

Regional competition runs from May 6-8. More information will follow in terms of live scoring and ways to follow along.
