Millcreek, UT – That is it. The final qualifier is in the books and the field set for the playing of the 25th Utah Senior State Amateur Championship.
Players from all over conjugated at Rose Park Golf Course Tuesday morning, located just west of downtown Salt Lake City, for one last crack at a spot in the seniors’ most coveted tournament. In almost perfect playing conditions, players were expected to go low with only 10 spots on the line. Jeff Powars – a local-school administrator – played hooky (with his school knowing of course) so he could shoot the tournament low 3-under-par 69.
“All I try and do in these tournaments is get it in the fairway, get it on the green, and try to make a putt or two,” Powars said. “I was shooting for an even par … These kinds of tournaments are hard. It’s not the kind of tournament where you are walking in saying, ‘OK, I’m going to try my best to win.’”
On a course with reachable par 5s and receptive greens, Powars was not alone in the scoring-low department. Four other players – Scott Lieber (Oakridge CC), Jeff Chugg (Roosevelt GC), Kurt Jamison (Wasatch Mountain State Park) and Brigham Gibbs (The Country Club) – went red at 2-under-par and one – Craig Wilson (TalonsCove GC) – shot a 71 (one-under-par).
With qualifiers now complete, all eyes are turned to the 18th green at Glenwild Golf Club & Spa – the final hole of the Utah Senior State Amateur Championship. A three-day event, at the beginning of June, awaits the state’s top senior golfers. Grit, determination and a will to win will be a needed for the 2018 victor.
Good luck, gentlemen. May the best golfer win.
