Concepcion Earns Big Sky Golfer of the Week Honors Following Fifth Place Finish In California

OGDEN, Utah — For the second time this season SUU senior Fidel Concepcion has been named Big Sky Men’s Golfer of the Week.

Concepcion earned the honor after a fifth place finish at the Sacramento State Invitational, where he shot a one-under 215 (71, 73, 71).

Concepcion is in his final season with the Thunderbirds, and has two regular season tournaments remaining before the Big Sky Conference Championship that will begin on April 27.

Next up for the Thunderbirds will be the 2018 Bandon Dunes Championship, which will run from March 11-13 in Bandon, Oregon.


Prasurtwong Secures Fourth Place Finish At Fresno State Classic

FRESNO, Calif. — Southern Utah’s Kamonwan (Poy) Prasurtwong secured a fourth place finish at the Fresno State Classic on Tuesday afternoon, as play came to a close at Copper River Country Club.

Prasurtwong shot a 71 in the opening round, and finished the second round with a 73 despite the finish being delayed to Tuesday morning. She finished strong with a 71 on the final day shooting a 215. That score was good enough for a fourth place finish at the event.

“Poy had a very solid couple days for us,” SUU head coach Richard Church said. “She’s starting to find her groove and we’re looking forward to seeing what she can do in St. George next week.”

Kyla Smith was second for the Thunderbirds, shooting a 235 (77, 74, 84). Nicole Jones (238), Lindsay Aleman (245) and Miranda Reyes (253) were the other three Thunderbirds in action in California.

As a team the Thunderbirds shot a 930 (307, 308, 315) to finish in a tie for 10th at the event.

Sacramento State won the event, shooting a 865 (285, 291, 289).  

Indiana’s Erin Harper and UC Irvine’s Avery French tied for the victory with a 211.

The Lady Thunderbirds will be in St. George next week to compete in the 2018 BYU at Entrada Classic and the 2018 Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational.


Concepcion Takes Fifth, Vincent Finishes Sixth At Sacramento State Invitational

ELK GROVE, Calif. — A pair of Thunderbirds scored a top-10 finish at the Sacramento State Invitational at Valley Hi Country Club on Tuesday, while the team finished sixth in the field.

Fidel Concepcion led the charge, shooting a one-under 215 (71, 73, 71) over the three rounds to finish in fifth place on the leaderboard. This matches Concepcion's best finish this season.   

Jake Vincent finished sixth in the field and second for the Thunderbirds, finishing just one stroke behind Concepcion with a 216 (72, 74, 70).

The duo led the the Thunderbirds to a sixth place finish in a 12 team field, shooting an 886 (298, 297, 291).

“To have two guys finishing in the top ten in this field is a big positive for us,” SUU head coach Richard Church. “Hopefully this will prepare them for another big event at Bandon Dunes coming up soon.”

Ali Hameed was third for SUU, shooting a 230 (78, 73, 79) and finishing in a tie for 46th.

Sam Butler and Bradley Collet both finished the event shooting a 232.

Thunderbird Ethan Gray played as an individual at the event, and shot a 248.   

Grand Canyon won the event after winning the tie-break over Long Beach State, as both teams were tied at the conclusion of the three rounds.

LBSU’s Joey Fryer won the event shooting a 210 (72, 71, 67).

Next up for the Thunderbirds will be the 2018 Bandon Dunes Championship, which will run from March 11-13 in Bandon, Oregon.
