Soldier Hollow’s Gold Course played host to the 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifier in Utah. Of the thirty-one competitors, two qualifiers advanced to the 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur October 7-12, 2017. Capital City Club Crabapple and Atlanta National Golf Club will serve as the stroke play co-hosts on October 7th and 8th, and the first round of match play, the Round of 64, will begin at Crabapple on Monday, October 9th. The 36-hole championship match will conclude with the Prize Presentation Ceremony on Thursday the 12th.

Brandon Hargett walked away the solo medalist and first qualifier in a field of fierce competitors by posting four-under 68. Back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3 and 4, plus a birdie on 8, allowed Brandon to post three under going out. He remained confident as he started the back nine with another birdie on 11, but he slipped on 13 and made bogey.

“I didn’t think I would come back from that bogey,” explained Hargett. “I thought I had lost it at that point.”

However, Brandon heard through the grapevine that 69 was the score to beat. He was three under through 17 holes. After a beautiful drive and approach shot to within 10 feet of the 18th hole, Hargett sunk his birdie putt to pull ahead of the three-way tie at 69 and earn a ticket to the national championship.

“I knew I had to make birdie on the last hole to qualify,” stated Hargett. “Sinking that birdie putt on 18 was exactly what I needed. I had so much fun, and I’m really excited to play in the Mid-Am.”

This is Brandon’s second year in a row qualifying for the Mid-Am. He qualified with 2016 Medalist Ryan Brimley and Darrin Overson in 2016, and the first year he qualified was in 2002.

Ryan Brimley, Draegen Majors, Jon Wright and Steve White each carded 69 to advance to a sudden-death playoff starting on the first hole of the Gold Course. Steve White, of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, was the first to fall with a bogey on No. 1. Jon Wright earned the second alternate spot with a par on No. 3. Finally, after eight playoff holes, Draegen Majors of Tulsa, Oklahoma, clinched the second qualifying spot alongside Brandon Hargett, and Ryan Brimley was named first alternate.
