Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah, hosted the eighth Utah State Amateur Qualifier of the 2017 season on Wednesday, June 21st. Eighty-three competitors showed off their skills on the Gold Course for a chance to claim the available 26 spots and two alternates. The scores were unsurprisingly higher than other qualifiers due to the challenging layout of the Gold Course. Only two players posted rounds in the red, Paul Cannon and Santiago Valera.

Cannon and Valera finished their rounds at one-under 71 to claim the first two qualifying spots and earn co-medalist honors. Paul Cannon started the day hot with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1 and 2. He finished the front nine bogey free at 33 (-3). Paul made bogeys on 12 and 14 but maintained his composure throughout the remainder of his round to finish under par alongside Valera. Santiago had a rough start to his day and carded four-over 40 going out. However, he proved himself worthy of competing with Utah golf’s top dogs by posting 31 (-5) coming in. Valera birdied his first three holes on the back as well as Nos. 14 and 17. A bogey-free finish catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard and earned him the qualifying victory.

A five-way tie at 76 made the cut, forcing the playoff for the two alternate spots at 77. Cassidy Anderson survived sudden death to earn the first alternate spot, and Zach Pymm clinched second alternate.
