Thomas Earns Medalist After Four-Birdie Streak at First State Am Qualifier of 2017

By Megan Terry, Programs Administrator

The sun is out, the Wasatch Front temperatures are finally rising and 2017 state am qualifiers have officially begun! Roosevelt Golf Course kicked off the 119th Utah State Amateur qualifying season on Wednesday, May 31st. The field included 16 contestants who were competing to claim the five qualifying and two alternate spots up for grabs.

It was Dale Thomas who climbed to the top of the leader board and earned medalist honors at two-under-par 70. Thomas played a decent front nine and carded 37 (+1) going out. However, his round took a turn for the better coming in; Dale hit a birdie streak right when he needed it most. He made back-to-back-to-back-to-back birdies (yes, four birdies in a row) starting on the par-5 No. 14 to card three-under 33 and clinch the victory and the first qualifying spot.

Kasey Edgehouse earned the second spot by posting 71 (-1); Christian Karren and Tyler Labrum tied at even-par 72 to claim the third and fourth spots, and Austin Jaramillo clinched the fifth and final qualifying spot by posting 74 (+2). Kaden McDonald is first alternate, and Blake Murray is second alternate.
