SUU Women’s Golf Finishes Sixth at Red Rocks Invitational

SEDONA, Ariz. – Play concluded at the Red Rocks Invitational on Sunday afternoon with the Thunderbird women’s golf team finishing sixth in a 13-team field at Oak Creek Country Club.

The Thunderbirds shot 302 as a team on Sunday to finish competition with an overall 906 and staying consistent in every round (303, 301, 302).

Freshman Poy Prasurtwong was the top player on the leaderboard for the T-Birds, shooting a 73 on Sunday to bring her three-day total to a five-over 221 (75, 73, 73). She finished in a tie for eighth place overall.  

“She got off to a slow start, she was four or five over par and was able to bring it back down,” SUU head coach Richard Church said. “It was nice to see her have the ability to turn it around in the middle of the round and make birdies.”

Fellow freshman Kyla Smith was second for the Thunderbirds at the event, closing out with a 73 to shoot a combined six-over 222 (75, 74, 73). She was in a tie for 11th on the leaderboard.

“We’re pleased with what both our those freshmen have been able to do for us so far,” Church said.  

Senior Taylor Viquelia shot a 77 on Sunday to land in a tie for 20th in the field. She shot a 10-over 226 through the three rounds of competition.

Junior Miranda Reyes started the day in a tie for 56th, but finished the competition in a tie for 48th after shooting a 79 on Sunday. She finished play with a 240 (83, 78, 79). Fellow junior Nicole Jones finished in a tie for 56th, shooting 244 (80, 82, 82).

Thunderbird sophomore Lindsay Wood played as an individual at the event, shooting an 86 on Sunday to finish with a 264.

Seattle won the event, overcoming a 10-shot deficit to top Toledo. Both teams shot 884 through three rounds, but Seattle won the tiebreaker to take home the team title.

Northern Arizona’s Sofia Anokhina won the event for the host team, shooting a 12-under 204 at the event.

The Thunderbirds will be back at it next week, as they will play in a pair of tournaments in St. George. They will start on Monday with the 2017 BYU at Entrada Classic before hosting the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational.
