UVU men’s golf finish in a tie for ninth at Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational

ERIE, Colorado—The Utah Valley University men's golf team moved up seven spots on the team leaderboard to finish in a tie for ninth in the 19-team field at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational on Tuesday at Colorado National Golf Club.
 
The Wolverines shot a final round score of 2-under-par 286 to finish the two-day tournament with a three-round score of 5-over-par 869 (292-291-286). UVU finished in a tie for ninth place with Utah State and UT Arlington.
 
The Wolverines finished ahead of Gonzaga, Seattle U, Wichita State, Weber State, Boise State, Colorado (B), Southern Utah and Santa Clara. Tournament host Colorado won the team title with a three-round score of 20-under-par 844 (282-276-286), winning the championship by one stroke over Wyoming and nine strokes over third place Utah.
 
“We finally put a decent round together today,” said Utah Valley head coach Chris Curran. “We still have work to do but we are going in the right direction.”
 
Blair Bursey and Ariel Elftman-Hanson led UVU as each tied for 30th on the individual leaderboard. Bursey shot a final-round 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of even par 216 (73-70-73). Elftman-Hanson carded a 3-under-par 69 with five birdies in Tuesday's final round to finish at even par 216 (72-75-69).
 
Cedric Laverdure recorded an even par 72 in his final round to finish the tournament in a tie for 44th at 3-over-par 219 (73-74-72). JT Timmons tied for 50th with a three-round score of 4-over-par 220 (75-73-72). Timmons recorded his lowest round of the tournament on Tuesday, shooting an even par 72.
 
Gabe Lysen rounded out the team scoring with an 8-over-par 80 in Tuesday's final round. He finished the tournament in a tie for 93rd at 12-over-par 228 (74-74-80). Payton Stott, who played the tournament as an individual, shot a final-round 7-over-par 79 to finish 102nd at 18-over-par 234 (75-80-79).
 
Northern Colorado's Coby Welch won individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 11-under-par 205 (70-69-66).
 
Utah Valley continues fall play at the OGIO Utah Invitational, Oct. 3-4, at the Jeremy Ranch Golf Club in Park City.
