Collinsworth Defeats Defending Champion Chugg at Women’s State Am

By Megan Terry

Dixie State University’s Cobair Collinsworth barely made the cut for 110th Utah Women’s State Amateur match play after defeating Apelila Galeai and Nicole Jones in a two-hole playoff for the final seed. After securing the No. 16 seed, Collinsworth knew she would face defending three-time champion and No. 1 seed Kelsey Chugg in the Round of 16, a challenge she was both willing and ready to embrace.

Chugg won the first hole of the day and remained up on Collinsworth through 14 holes. She was as many as 3up through 12 holes before Collinsworth started her comeback.

“I just kept thinking about the next shot and was optimistic the entire day,” stated Collinsworth. “The positive attitude finally paid off when I started hitting it in the fairway and draining putts.”

After winning three holes in a row, Cobair forced the match to all square and won a fourth to gain the advantage for the first time on holes 16 and 17 at 1up. Chugg birdied the eighteenth hole to take the match to the 19th hole and both made bogey. On the 166-yard par 3 at Victory Ranch, Collinsworth made birdie to win the match in 20 holes and knock Chugg out of the running for her fourth Utah Women’s State Am title.

“I pushed my mental game to where it needed to be and found confidence. Confidence is the secret ingredient I have been missing. Playing with Kelsey was so awesome. She is so sweet and even-tempered on the golf course. I admire that and will always be working to obtain that perfect behavior as well. I look forward to playing in the semis on one of Utah’s greatest courses. What a time to be alive! I am going to enjoy it!”

First-round leader Sadie Palmer (4) defeated Laura Gerner (13) in 19 holes during the Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals against BYU’s Kendra Dalton (5). Dalton defeated Palmer 4 and 3 to advance to the semifinals against Cobair Collinsworth (16).

Stroke play qualifying medalist and No. 2 seed Lea Garner defeated Miranda Reyes (15) 6 and 5 in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals where she defeated Kerstin Fotu (10) 4 and 3 to earn a spot in the semifinal match against former BYU teammate and 2015 runner-up Brooklyn Hocker (3). Hocker defeated Kimberly Nyhus (14) 7 and 6 in the Round of 16 and Carly Dehlin (6) 2 and 1 during the quarterfinals to earn her spot in the semifinal match against Garner.
