Sirene Blair Advances to U.S. Women’s Amateur Round of 32
By Megan Terry
After carding stroke play qualifying rounds of 73-71—144 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pennsylvania, Sirene Blair advanced to the match play portion of the tournament tied in thirty-ninth place as the No. 40 seed.
“I played really steady today,” said Blair. “I got off to a slow start, but I was able to recover and take a lead. I still left a couple shots out on the course, so hopefully I can tighten those up during tomorrow's match(es).”
Blair faced No. 25 seed Sierra Sims of Austin, Texas, during the Round of 64 and defeated her 2 and 1 to advance to the Round of 32. Sims was up on Blair right off the bat, but Sirene turned the match around on the seventh hole to return to all square. From there, the 2014 Utah Women’s State Amateur champion was 1 up through 12 holes, got another one back, and held her ground the remainder of the match at 2 up to earn the win.
“The course has tricky greens and rewards a lot of great shots, so I'm going to try and stay calm and steady tomorrow and do my best to come out on top.”
Sirene will face off against No. 8 seed Dylan Kim on Thursday, August 4th at 7:30 a.m. during the Round of 32. If she advances, Round of 16 matches will take place in the afternoon.
