Garner Captures Medalist Honors at Women’s State Am Stroke Play Qualifying
By Megan Terry
Lea Garner fired 110th Utah Women’s Amateur stroke play qualifying rounds of 75-69—144 to capture medalist honors at even par and earn the No. 2 seed for the Round of 16.
Garner started the week with a 75 (+3) during the first round. She carded three-over 39 with three bogeys on Victory Ranch’s front nine and even-par 36 on the back with another three bogeys and birdies on the last three holes.
“The first round was a little rough just trying to figure out the greens,” expressed Garner. “Today was a lot better. I was able to get a feel for the greens and make some putts.”
The former BYU athlete returned for Round 2 ready to move up the leaderboard and posted even par on the front nine with birdies on Nos. 1 and 8. She went bogey free on the back and birdied holes 12, 13, and 16 to shoot 33 (-3) and overtake Round 1 leader Sadie Palmer, who posted a 78 following her Round 1 score of 68.
“I feel that I am getting more comfortable with the course so I can be more aggressive with my swing. With that, I am excited to continue on to match play.”
Round of 16 match play will begin Thursday, August 4th at 8 a.m. at Victory Ranch Club in Kamas, Utah. Lea Garner will face No. 15 seed Miranda Reyes at 8:36 a.m.
The 2015 Utah Women’s State Amateur champion and No. 1 seed Kelsey Chugg will take on No. 16 seed Cobair Collinsworth in the first match. Collinsworth earned the last match play spot with her two-day total of 160 (+16) in a two-hole playoff with Apelila Galeai and Nicole Jones.
