Carson Lundell completely dominated the 36-hole stroke play qualifying portion of the 118th Utah State Amateur Championship. The 18-year-old from Alpine, Utah, carded a seven-under-par 65 during his first round at Fox Hollow Golf Course, allowing him to arrive at Alpine Country Club for Round 2 confident as ever. Despite the inevitable pressures and anxieties associated with competing in the longest continuous tournament in the world, Lundell remained hot enough to post a Day 2 total of six-under. He is the No. 1 seed due to 2015 State Am Champion Jordan Rodgers turning professional.
All five past Utah state amateur champions in the 2016 field have advanced to match play. 1985 State Am Champion Steve Borget will be competing as the No. 32 seed against No. 33 Rand Sargent. Two-time champion Jon Wright (2012, 2014) is seeded 51 and will be taking on No. 14 Steven Croft. 1998 champion and 2015 runner-up Darrin Overson qualified in the seventh seed position and is facing No. 58 Ryan Barber. 2004 Utah State Amateur champion Clark Rustand claimed the No. 5 seed at T4 following 36 holes of stroke play. His opponent, Ryder Velasquez, clinched the No. 60 seed on Tuesday in a 13-way playoff for the last five spots.
The youngest player in the field, Preston Summerhays, earned the 23 seed after carding a 74 (+2) at Fox Hollow and 71 (-1) at Alpine. The 13-year-old is well on his way to following in his father’s and uncle’s footsteps. As the son of former Web.com Tour and PGA TOUR player Boyd Summerhays and the nephew of current TOUR player and 2016 U.S. Open top-ten finisher Danny Summerhays, he has a lot to live up to, and beginning to live up to them is exactly what he is doing.
The Round of 64 match play stage begins at 7:30 a.m. on No. 1 at Alpine Country Club. Lundell will face off against No. 64 seed Brett Sampson. Tee times will run until 12:09 p.m. with No. 22 seed Kenny You versus No. 43 Ryan Brimley. Live scoring is available on uga.org, and links are posted on all UGA social media platforms. Spectators are welcome.
