Owen Overtakes Horner to Win Utah Mid-Amateur Championship
By Megan Terry
Kurt Owen rose to the occasion during Tuesday’s final round of the Utah Mid-Amateur Championship at Hubbard Golf Course at Hill Air Force Base to claim the title of 2016 champion with a three-round total of seven-under-par 209. Owen shot a Round 1 score of two-under-par 70 and a four-under-par 68 during Round 2 to place him just one shot behind Championship Division Day 1 leader Dan Horner heading into the final round.
It was Owen’s recovery on Hubbard’s Par 3 No. 13 that proved to be his turning point and helped him gain the confidence to overtake Horner and earn the win. Owen’s approach shot flew the green and ended up on the back fringe where he was able to get up and down for par, while fellow competitors Dan Horner and Daniel Stewart made bogey.
“It feels pretty darn good to get this win. I’ve put in a lot of hours to get where I am now,” stated Owen. “The support from my wife and the freedom of my job have allowed me to get to this point. This reminds me why I do what I do and makes all the time I’ve dedicated to playing and practicing worth it.”
Jon Wright earned the win in the Masters Division after carding a four-under-par 68 during the final round. Wright gained the lead early after posting back-to-back scores of 71 and 73 on Monday. His consistency and ability to go bogey free on Tuesday allowed Wright to remain atop the leaderboard and secure the win at four-under-par 212.
In the Senior Division, Jeff Powars finished at +3 219 to pull ahead of Day 1 co-leader Kurt Jamison. Powars and Jamison were tied at three-under-par 147 after playing 36 holes on Monday. Powars shot a Round 1 score of 74 and a Round 2 score of 73, while Jamison posted scores of 71 and 76. However, Powars finished strong by shooting a final-round score of one-under-par 71 to beat Jamison’s 73 and clinch the victory.
