60s, 70s, and 80s! Hopefully your scores have been matching the lower end of the unseasonably warm temperatures throughout the state. If the last two weeks have been any indication of how the golf season is going to progress, we are in good shape. In Northern Utah, it has been tough to find a parking spot at any course you visit, and in Southern Utah I have heard reports of “a golfer’s paradise.”
We want to be better! Help us out by taking the 2016 UGA Membership Survey. Although internally we feel that we are making great changes, they may not be what you or other members actually want. We want to know if you have any thoughts or ideas for us and we will do our best to implement changes accordingly.
USGA Handicapping Week is March 7th- 11th
Watch for updates and social media posts from the UGA and USGA about handicapping. We are expecting a lot of great information from the USGA on how handicapping works and what the future holds. Don’t let this week be the only time that you educate yourself on the handicapping system. If you ever have any questions, please email [email protected]
Score Posting in Northern Utah
Don’t forget that score posting season starts on March 15th! If you haven’t renewed your membership yet, now is the time! Visit the “How to Renew” page for more information. After you renew, don’t forget to download the GHIN Mobile App from your phone’s App Store so that you can post scores from anywhere!
The UGA staff is ramping for the first tournament of the season down in St. George. The UGA’s Director of Rules and Competitions, Jacob Miller, describes Winterchamps as, “an event with a player-friendly format” and as “one of the strongest fields we have all year.” When asked about the 2016 sites, he said:
“We are excited to add The Ledges to the lineup this year. It is a very popular course among the players and St. George residents. Sky Mountain is one of the most beautiful and popular courses in the area and after many players requested the site be utilized we have decided to put it back on the schedule. The third site, SunRiver, is a course that we have been excited to work with over the last few years. The staff and superintendent, Jimmy Blair, continue to impress players and residents, with the improvements that they continue to make to the golf course. The site was recently selected to be a qualifying site for Web.com Q- School later this year. It will also host the 2016 USGA Four-Ball Qualifier the Monday after Winterchamps.”
If you haven’t signed up for Winterchamps yet, it’s not too late! We currently have 210 entries and the deadline in March 10th at 4:00.
New Staff Members
Last, but not least, the UGA is pleased to announce the addition of Megan Terry to our full-time staff as our Programs Administrator. She will play many roles in the organization as she will be responsible for managing and organizing the 8-man team play leagues, women’s team play league, UGA news and communications, liaison for the Utah Golf Foundation’s new programs, and she will work closely with lead course rater, Reese Nielsen. Megan was one of our 2015 USGA P.J. Boatwright Interns and we are looking forward to keeping her on board. Stay tuned for a full article on Megan and her new position.
Replacing Megan as our year-long USGA P.J. Boatwright Intern is Kevin Johnson. Kevin has a strong background in the golf industry, and since his start in early-February he has been a great asset to our team.
