Services Set Saturday for Weber Coach Jeff Smith

Obituary for Jeffrey Allen “Smitty” Smith

Jeffrey Allen Smith, age 61, passed away on February 16, 2016 after a short battle with Leukemia. He was born January 5, 1955 the first born son of Alma Gibson and Mary Jean Schott Smith. Jeff married Karen Wiser on September 15, 1989 and they later divorced. Many will miss his sweater vests and his genuine personal touch that all have witnessed.
He graduated from Ogden High, served in the England, Birmingham mission, and graduated from Weber State in business administration and finance in 1980. Jeff was one of those fortunate individuals whose life’s passion became his career. Jeff was the pro at El Monte for 10 years and then the head pro at Golf City for 12 years. He was the 1989 Utah PGA Teacher of the Year and the 1996 PGA Junior Golf Leader Award recipient. In 1991 Jeff joined Weber State as the ladies golf coach, later becoming the Director of Golf, where he served for 24 years. He coached the women to the 2001 Big Sky Championship, and won Big Sky Coach of the Year awards in 1999 and 2000. His life revolved around Weber State Athletics and he considered everyone that “bled purple” like an immediate family member.
Jeff dedicated himself to making life more comfortable for others; and used his life’s passion, golf, to share his love for God’s children. Jeff was always happy to see you, and commonly greeted you with “Hey Hey Hey”, followed by your nickname, a compliment and a smile; and was quick to peel off a twenty to feed you.
He is survived by his daughters: Tarra Crouch (Tyler), Courtney Smith; grandchildren: Paige, Hunter, Ava, McKay and Cole with a new grandson on the way. He is also survived by siblings: David G. Smith (Debra), Susan DeYoung (Mike), Kirk D. Smith (Katie), and Ann Syphus, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many adopted Weber State golf team members.
The family suggests donations be made to the Jeff Smith Scholarship Fund at www.weberstatesports.com
