Wolverines close Cal Poly Invite with ninth-place finish
ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – The Utah Valley University women's golf team concluded the fall portion of its 2015-16 season on Sunday by placing ninth at the Cal Poly Lady Mustang Invitational with a two-round total of 637 (+61).
After carding an opening round 321 on Saturday, the UVU women capped the tournament with a 316 on Sunday.
Senior Kalea Heu led the Wolverines at the Cal Poly Invite by tying for 20th place with an 11-over-par 155. Heu tallied scores of 77 and 78 en route to earning the 20th-place finish.
Fellow senior Cassandra Lesa was next for UVU, as she tied for 25th with a 12-over-par 156. Lesa, who put up a team-best six birdies on the weekend, carded scores of 74 and 82 en route to her 156. Freshman Katie Perkins, who played the event as an individual, too tied for 25th place with a 12-over 156 of her own. Perkins put up scores of 76 and 80 at the tournament.
Redshirt freshman Ana Raga posted the fourth-best score for the Wolverines on the weekend, while playing the field as an individual, with a two-round total of 163 (86-77) to finish in a tie for 45th place. Freshmen Carly Dehlin and Pernille Echberg as well as junior Kimberly Nyhus rounded out UVU's participants at the tournament, as the trio all tied for 51st place with identical scores of 165.
UC Riverside moved up two spots on the leaderboard on Sunday to win the tournament title with an 18-over-par 594 (300-294), while the host Mustangs placed second at 33-over (299-310—609) and Santa Clara placed third at 34-over (298-312—610). UCR's Hannah Facchini earned individual medalist honors with a 3-under-par 141 (71-70).
The two-round tournament was contested at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, California.
The Cal Poly Lady Mustang Invite marks the sixth and final tournament of the fall for the Wolverines. Following the winter break, UVU will return to the course on March 10-11 at the SUU Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah.
