Murphy Loses in Quarterfinals at USGA Men’s Senior Amateur
Pat Murphy won three matches at the USGA Senior Men’s Amateur Championship, but the charm of those three matches wasn’t there Wednesday morning as he lost his quarterfinal match to Tom Brandes of Bellevue, Washington, 5 and 4.
He was down five on the Hidden Creek Golf Club in New Jersey before the sun rose in Salt Lake. He lost five of the first seven holes. He birdied the ninth hole to cut the margin to four going onto the back side. The change of nines didn’t change his luck and he bogeyed the tenth hole to go back down by five. He won his second hole of the day on 12 when Brandes had one of his rare bogeys. The match ended on 13 when Murphy made his fifth bogey of the morning.
All in all it was a great experience. He made it to match play and won three matches before the bubble burst. Records aren’t kept of such things, but his advancement to the quarterfinal stage of the USGA Men’s Senior Match Play is a significant achievement that few ever attain.
