Murphy Stages Another Comeback, Advances to Quarterfinals of USGA Men’s Senior Am

Despite making four bogeys on the first seven holes Patrick Murphy righted the ship and then coasted to a 2 and 1 victory over Peter Wegman of Fort Lauderdale, Florida  to advance to the quarterfinals of the USGA Men’s Senior Amateur Championship being held at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.

Murphy lost four of the first seven holes, but won two of them and trailed only by two at the turn.

The momentum of the match changed on the 12th hole when Murphy  won the hole with a bogey and won the next hole with a par to square the match.

They each made tension packed pars on 14 and 15, and the tide turned for good when Wegman bogeyed 16 and 17 and Murphy won with pars.

Murphy went into match play as the 63rd seed out of 64, and pulled off the upset of the first day by coming from behind to defeat second seed Doug Lacrosse in a stunning turn of events. Going into the 17th hole Murphy trailed by two, but he won 17 and 18 to square the match and then birdied the first sudden death hole to win, a finish right out of story books.

In the Round of 32 Murphy never trailed in beating Randy Reifer, 2 and 1.

The tournament is now down to the final eight and six of the eight were seeded 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10. Murphy, at 63rd seed is the big outlier. Kevin Cahill of Wisconsin is the other outlier with a 46th seeding.

The quarterfinal matches are as follows:

Randall Lewis (1) vs. Chip Lutz (8)

Tim Jackson (4) vs. Gary Robinson (5)

Pat Murphy (63) vs. Tom Brandes (10)

Kevin Cahill (46) vs. Steve Leibler (6)
