Hammer, Murphy in Good Shape at USGA Senior Am; Nyhus, Gaiotti Also in Good Position
Craig Hammer and Patrick Murphy, representing Utah at the USGA Men’s Senior Amateur Championship, each shot one over par 72 and are tied for 11th place going into the final qualifying round tomorrow. The top 64 players advance into match play and so they are both in excellent position to reach match play.
The tournament is being played at Hidden Creek Golf Club at Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.
Hammer made four birdies and five bogeys and Murphy had five birdies, four pars, and a double bogey. The leader is Tim Jackson of Germantown, Tennessee with a three under par 68.
The USGA Women’s Senior Am is being held concurrently, but is being played Hillwood Country Club in Nashville, Tennessee and Utahns Sue Nyhus and Annette Gaiotti are also in position to advance to match play, although not quite as secure as the men.
Nyhus and Gaiotti are both veterans of USGA championships, more so than any other Utah women golfers in history. Nyhus shot 80 and is in 53rd place and Gaiotti shot 82 and is in 71st place. Nyhus needs to hold her own in the second round and Gaiotti needs to move up the ladder a bit. Sixty-four advance to match play.
