UVU WGolf: Two Wolverines post top-10 finishes at Hobble Creek Classic
SPRINGVILLE, Utah – Junior Kimberly Nyhus and redshirt freshman Carly Dehlin both posted top-10 finishes to lead the way for the Utah Valley University women's golf team at the 2015 Hobble Creek Fall Classic as they each tied for 10th place at 7-over par.
The UVU duo both carded a two-round total of 149 en route to tying for 10th place. Nyhus earned her 10th-place finish after recording a school record 3-under par 68 during Monday's opening round and a 10-over 81 in wet playing conditions during round two. Dehlin, who was playing in just her second-ever collegiate tournament, recorded scores of 76 (+5) and 73 (+2) at the event. Dehlin's 2-over 73 on Tuesday was UVU's best score during round number two.
Nyhus and Dehlin combined to tally eight birdies at the tournament.
As a team, the Wolverines finished the Classic tied for 11th with a two-round total of 617 (+49). After carding a 304 during Monday's opening round, UVU finished the tournament with a 313 on Tuesday.
“I'm really proud of how our young team competed here this week,” head coach Dr. Sue Nyhus said. “There are so many freshmen and there is so much to learn, but they are all open to working hard and are doing great. Carly Dehlin particularly has stepped up for us and for her to finish 10th is a tremendous success.”
Hawai'i won the tournament title at 15-over par (293-290—583), while New Mexico State placed second at 23-over (298-293—591) and Cal Poly took third at 30-over (293-305—598). The Rainbow Wahine's Eimi Koga also took home individual medalist honors after winning the event at 1-under par (70-71—141).
“We are grateful to have been able to host such a strong field at the Hobble Creek Classic this week,” Nyhus added. “Hawai'i is an exceptional team and it was wonderful to have so many strong programs here at Hobble Creek. Hosting a tournament of this caliber is a big step forward for Utah Valley University and I'm already looking forward to doing it again next year.”
Seniors Cassandra Lesa and Kalea Heu, as well as freshman Katie Perkins rounded out UVU's field of five as they placed 62nd, 69th and 82nd, respectively. Lesa posted rounds of 80 and 79 (159), while Heu put up a pair of 80s (160) and Perkins tallied an 81 and an 85 (166).
Freshmen Pernille Echberg (78-82—160) and Ana Raga (86-84—170) too participated in the tournament for the Wolverines as individuals and placed 69th and 85th, respectively. Echberg was one of just two participants to record an eagle at the tournament as she buried an eagle putt during Monday's opening round on the par-5 18th hole.
The two-day tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes but the third and final round of competition was washed out on Tuesday due to rain. The Hobble Creek Fall Classic, which is UVU's lone home tournament of the season, was contested at the Hobble Creek Golf Course in Springville.
The Wolverines will now prepare to hit the road for next week's WSU Cougar Cup that will be contested at the Palouse Ridge Country Club in Pullman, Washington, on Sept. 21-22.
