Team Utah Finishes in 11th, Chugg Finishes Tied for Second at USGA Women’s State Team

Kelsey Chugg finished in a tie for second in the individual portion of the USGA Women’s State Team Championship Saturday at Dalhousie Golf Club in Missouri and the Utah team finished in 11th place. It was Utah’s best performance ever in both the individual and team categories at the USGA Championship.

Chugg shot a final round of even par 72 to go with previous rounds of 75 and 71 to finish at two over par 218. The only player in the field to best her was Shannon Johnson, of Massachusetts. Johnson won the medalist honors by six shots with consistent scores of 71-70-71-212.

Utah’s Sadie Palmer shot 81-72-80-233 and Annette Gaiotti shot 83-79-81-243. The format consists of three woman teams with the low two individual scores counting each day toward the team total.

“Our ladies can be proud. They made a great showing, and of course, Kelsey’s performance was special,” said Bill Walker, UGA Executive Director who travelled with the team. “Only one player in the strong field outperformed her.”

“It’s a long and tight course at sea level and length and accuracy were critical for good scoring,” Walker said. “It was hard to recover from errant tee shots. Although no penalty was involved it amounted to a loss of a stroke just to get it back into play,” he added.
