Turnarounds Abound; Owen-Nielson Win Utah 4-Ball Title; Hook-Bachman Top Seniors
The opening day of the Utah Four-Ball Championship saw brothers Brandon and Jason Hargett blitz the difficult Victory Ranch golf course with a 63 that gave them a three shot lead on the field going into the second and final round and guess what happened? The course exacted its revenge. The brothers, who made nine birdies and no bogeys that first day, made only one birdie the second day, and struggled to a second round 77 for a two day total of 140 (-4) to finish in at tie for sixth place.
On the flip side Kurt Owen and Kirk Nielson improved by seven shots and shot a final round 64 to edge Robbie Fillmore and Jed Rammell for the title by one shot. Owen and Nielsen shot 71-64-135 to take top honors, and Fillmore and Rammell shot steady 68s for a 136 final tally.
“The conditions were not quite the same both days,” said Jake Miller, UGA Director of Competitions. “The wind was more of a factor the second day, especially for those who went out near the end.”
In fact, Owen and Nielsen, who went out early in the round, was the only team among the leaders who improved the second day. Owen and Nielsen shot 71 the first day and 64 the second day. All other top ten scores had higher scores the second day.
In the Senior Division Russell Hook and Rob Bachman pulled a big upset and beat the unbeatables, Kurt Siddens and Brett Sampson, by three shots. Hook and Bachman shot 64-67-131 while Siddens and Sampson posted 66-68-134. Siddens and Sampson won the title last year, which was the first year of this event.
“It is becoming one of our most popular events,” Miller said. “It’s really good for golfing camaraderie for strong rivals to get a chance to team up together and pull for one another.”
Miller also raved about Victory Ranch.
“Victory Ranch is a great golf course. What a beautiful venue,” he said, “There wasn’t a blade of grass out of place. It’s as good as it gets.”
