Trio of State Am Champions Advance in FedEx Chase

The Utah State Am trio of champions, Daniel Summerhays, Tony Finau, and Zac Blair all advanced to the second stage of the PGA Tour ending FedEx championship with outstanding performances at The Barclays, the first of the FedEx playoff tourneys.  All three improved their Fed Ex standings at The Barclays.

Zac Blair finished in a tie for fourth at The Barclays and improved a stroke every day on rounds of 69-68-67-66-270. His Fed Ex standing leaped 61 places, from 106th to 45th.

Summerhays finished one shot behind Blair in a tie for sixth place on rounds of 67-70-68-66-271 and improved his Fed Ex standings by 26 places, going from 66th to 20th.

Finau grabbed leaderboard attention early at The Barclays with an opening round of 65 and stayed front and center with a second round 69. He fell off the last two rounds with 71-70 and finished tied for 16th at 275. While he has to be disappointed with his final two rounds he capped the tournament off with an attention grabbing 10-foot eagle putt after driving the green on the par four final hole. His 16th place finish improved his Fed Ex standing from 39th place to 32nd place.

The FedEx series is the season ending elimination style championship. Only the top 125 players on the PGA Tour qualified for The Barclays. The next tournament is the Duetsche Bank  Championship that includes only the top 100 players.

The third stage is the BMW Championship and it includes the top 70 players with no cut. The final stage is the Coca Cola Classic that includes only the top 30 players.

Scott Pinckney, a former Utahn who played in the Utah Junior Golf Association events, also advanced to the second stage of the FedEx. He finished 50th at the Barclays and improved his FedEx standing from 78th place to 76th place.

The remaining Fed Ex schedule is as follows:

September 4-7- Deutsche Bank Championship at the TPC Boston (100 players)

September 17-20- BMW Championship at Conway Farms, Lake Forest, Illinois (70 players)

September 24-27- Tour Championship at East Lake, Atlanta (30 players)
