Powars is Low Senior Amateur at Utah Senior Open; Simkins Takes Super Senior Title
On Toana Vista greens that were lightning quick Steve Schneiter edged Jimmy Blair by one shot to win the Allen Simkins Utah Senior Open Thursday and the guy who the tournament was named after, Al Simkins, won the Super Senior Division. (A separate story will soon be posted on the presentation of the award to Simkins.)
Schneiter and Blair, two of the best players in Utah for the past 30 years, separated themselves from the rest of the field by five strokes over the two day tournament.
Blair opened the tournament with three straight birdies, but Schneiter out-birdied Blair by seven to six to lead by one after the first round. In the final round Schneiter bogeyed the fourth hole to lose his lead, but regained it on ten with an eagle compared to Blair’s birdie. Schneiter bogeyed 12, but birdied 13. Schneiter birdied 13, but Blair countered on 14 to tie the lead. Schneiter birdied the 17th hole to claim the final margin of victory.
Brad Stone finished third with a tally of 69-71-140.
The tournament namesake, Allen Simkins, shot one under par 143 on rounds of 73-70 to win the Super Senior Division by three shots over Ruben Escobedo.
Jeff Powars won the Senior Division with rounds of 72-72-144.
