Sirene Blair Edges Kelsey Chugg on Last Hole for UGA Women’s Stroke Play Title

Sirene Blair and Kelsey Chugg, paired together in the final round of the Utah Women’s Stroke Play Championship, fed off of each other’s good play, and put on a wonderful exhibition of golf Thursday at Fox Hollow Golf Course. They both played bogey-free all day with Blair making a birdie on the final hole to win the championship.

Blair is the defending champion of the Utah Women’s State Amateur Championship which is the next major event for women’s golf beginning August 3rd at Hidden Valley Country Club.

Blair started the day one shot ahead of Chugg, but Chugg took the lead with birdies on the first two holes and widened it with another birdie on five. Blair birdied seven and they both birdied nine. That gave Chugg a 32 on the front and a one shot lead.

They both birdied ten and then Blair made the equivalent of a bowling ‘turkey’ by getting three straight birdies on 14, 15, and 16. Chugg also birdied 16, but was suddenly one behind Blair.

In harmony with the beauty of the golf Chugg birdied 17 to deadlock it again, and then Blair finished off the masterpiece with a final hole birdie to win the title by one.

Between the two of them it was a marvelous display of golf. Chugg shot 32 on the front and Blair shot 31 on the back and they each posted final rounds of 65 with Blair winning the title on the strength of her opening round 70 as compared to Chugg’s 71.

Meanwhile, the first round leader and defending champion Lea Garner shot a commendable one under par final round 71, but it couldn’t withstand the seven under par final rounds by Blair and Chugg. Garner led after the first round with a 68, but lost the lead and never regained it when she bogeyed the fifth hole.
