Sadie Palmer Takes Lead at Mary Lou Baker Open With 66
Sadie Palmer shot five under par 66 to grab the first round lead of the Mary Lou Baker Open, but her lead is tenuous at best as right on her heels, just one shot back, is defending champion Kelsey Chugg.
Those two along with third place Xena Motes will be paired together in the final round Friday at Davis Park. The lead group will be teeing off at about 10:30 a.m.
During a five hole stretch on the front nine Palmer made three birdies and an eagle to account for her solid score. Chugg had five birdies, but bogeyed the ninth hole.
The Mary Lou Baker Open leaderboard is chock full of the state’s most distinguished women players. Brooklyn Hocker and Carly Oldroyd also shot under par and are very much in the hunt. They each shot 70 and are tied for fourth place. Tara Green also shot even par 71.
Sirene Blair and Lea Garner still have their eye on the top prize. Garner shot 71 and Blair shot 72. Blair, who plays collegiately at San Diego State, won the title in 2013 and 2010, and Garner, who plays at BYU, won the title in 2012 and 2011. So between the two of them they dominated the title until Chugg won it last year.
Palmer has a five shot lead on Garner and a six shot lead on Blair and that is quite a sizeable lead with just one round to play.
Competition is also being held in second and third flights.
