Summerhays, Finau In; Banz, Blair, Rasmussen Out at U.S. Open
The USGA Sectional Qualifying tournaments for the U.S. Open were held Monday at numerous sites throughout the country and two former Utah State Amateur champions, Daniel Summerhays and Tony Finau, earned spots in the tournament finals that will be held at Chambers Bay in Washington, June 18-21.
Summerhays, playing at the Brookside Country Club sectional in Columbus, Ohio, shot 67-68-135 to easily qualify. Finau, playing at the Springfield Country Club sectional, shot 66-67-133 and also advanced to the U.S. Open.
Utah golf fans will remember the sectional qualifyings last year when Zac Blair won the sectional and advanced to the Big Dance, and then made the cut that sparked his professional career. This year Blair failed to advance from the sectional. Playing at Brookside CC he shot 69-78-147.
All three, Summerhays, Finau, and Blair are former Utah State Am champions. Summerhays won back-to-back State Ams in 2000 and 2001, and then lost to Finau in the 2006 championship match. Blair won the title in 2009.
Other Utahns who had advanced to the sectional qualifyings failed in their quest to reach the U.S. Open. Playing at Big Canyon Golf Course in Newport Beach, California the Utahns’ scores were as follows: Matt Baird, 69-73-142; Rhett Rasmussen, 67-84-151; Keith Clearwater, 76-76-152; Austin Banz, 75-78-153; Kyle Chappell, 70-83-153
