Ryan Brimley Wins Utah Mid-Amateur Title at Valley View
Ryan Brimley sank a five-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a sudden death playoff with Jordan Rodgers to win the Utah Mid-Am championship Saturday at Valley View Golf Course. In other divisions Brandon Hargett edged Darrin Overson and his brother and defending champion Jason Hargett to win the Masters Division (40 and over) and Craig Wilson came from behind to win the Senior Division (50 and over) with a final round 68 to edge Kirk Siddens by two shots.
The Mid-Am Division took the spotlight on the final day when Jordan Rodgers followed up a spectacular shot by tapping in a four-inch putt on the last hole to force a playoff with Ryan Brimley.
On the playoff hole they both hit their drives into the right rough, but Brimley made a great approach shot to five feet from the hole and made the birdie to win the title. Rodgers got onto the green from out of the rough, but his birdie putt slid past the hole.
Robbie Fillmore, who won the title in 2013 and was runnerup last year, went into the final round tied for the lead with Brimley, but he shot 73 and fell into third place.
Darrin Overson led the Masters Division going into the final round, but Brandon Hargett shot a one under par 73 to win by one shot over Overson and by two shots over his brother who was the defending champion in both the Mid-Am and Master’s Divisions.
Chuck O’Brien, who dropped out of competitive golf for a decade, made a notable showing with a fourth place finish in the Masters Division and only four shots out of the lead.
Craig Wilson, who won the Utah Senior Match Play several weeks ago at Davis Park, shot a final round 68 to come from behind and win the Senior Division by two shots over Kirk Siddens. This is Wilson’s first serious effort as a senior golfer and he has made his presence well known with two consecutive victories. He hails originally from the Seattle area.
