Utah Golf Week in Review, Preview

Week in Review

The UGA Senior Match Play Championship was the highlight of the past week with Craig Wilson winning the Championship Division, Allen Simkins winning the Senior Division, and Craig Sorensen winning the Net Division. The respective runnerups were Brett Sampson, Jeff Campbell, and Jason Tanner.

The championship matches were a bit of an anti-climax to the tournament. The high point was the improbable come-from-behind upset victory by unknown John Edwards over two-time champion Kirk Siddens. Edwards was three down with three to play in their quarterfinal match and somehow won all three holes and the first hole of sudden death. Going into that match Siddens had won 12 straight matches and he didn’t survive the 13th.

It was a great tournament and except for a few raindrops beyond control of the committee, the tournament ran flawlessly. Davis Park and its professional staff led by Brad Stone set a tone of cooperation and support, and the UGA committee people were all over the place making things run smoothly.

The Local Qualifying for the U. S. Open was held at Glen Eagle with Austin Banz and Rhett Rasmussen sharing medalist honors and earning the two spots for the Sectional Qualifying.

The Utah High School Girls Golf Championships were conducted by the Utah Section of the PGA in five divisions with the champions as follows: 5A- Davis, 4A- Provo, 3A- Desert Hills, 2A- Rowland Hall, and 1A St. Joseph’s.

The Sanpete County Open at Palisade Golf Course had co-champions in the professional division with Matt Baird and Dusty Fielding shooting 67s. Scott Brandt won the senior pro division with a 76. Nickolas Britt won the amateur side with a 69 and Brady Hughes shot 70. Complete results of the tournament have not been reported.

The weekend tournaments on the Utah amateur circuit saw David Jennings win the Bountiful Ridge Amateur and Mark Gressman win the Western Amateur at Oquirrh Hills.

On the PGA Tour the Utah highlight of the week was Tony Finau finishing in 16th place at the Wells Fargo Championship and pocketing $113,600.
