Siddens Has Hands Full in Seeking Third Straight UGA Senior Match Play Title

The UGA Senior Match Play Championship got underway today at Davis Park with competition in three divisions. The Senior Championship Division includes players from 50 to 64, and the Super Senior Division includes those 65 and older. There is also a Net Division that includes seniors all ages 50 and over.

Medalists were Ben Maddox in the Championship Division and David Fischer in the Super Senior Division. They both shot 67s. The two divisions play from separate tees.

Kirk Siddens, the two-time defending champion of the UGA Senior Match Play Championship, has his work cut out for him in his quest for a third straight title. When you look closely at the star-studded field one can only marvel that he was able to win twice in a row, let alone a possible third time. The field is so rich in talent that making the final 32 was a significant mark of achievement.

In the Championship Division there were eight players tied at 75 for the final six match play spots and the playoff list included Hall of Famer Todd Barker, a past match play champion Bill Probst, and Brett Sampson, Paul Cannon, Dana Nelson, Ruben Escobedo, Gordon Garff, and Mike Holm. Garff and Holm got eliminated in the playoff.

Other prominent seniors who didn’t make the final 32 included two-time tournament runnerup Pat Murphy, Kurt Bernhisel, Dan Parkinson, Rich Stewart, and Charlie Davis.

Super Senior Division

 

Fischer’s 67 led the Super Senior Division qualifying and Richard Willis finished two shots back with a two under par 69, and Al Simkins shot even par 71.

Based on the qualifying scores Fischer should get past his first round opponent John Taylor with ease. Fischer took 15 fewer shots than Taylor in the qualifying round. Taylor’s 82 earned him the 16th seed and the tough task of facing Fischer in the first round of match play.
