Rasmussen, Banz Share Medalist Honors at U.S. Open Local Qualifying

Two products of the Utah Junior Golf Association, Rhett Rasmussen and Austin Banz, shared medalist honors at the U.S. Open Local Qualifying at Glen Eagle Golf Course. They each shot six under par 66's and will advance the next stage of the U.S. Open qualifying.

If you recall, it was at the next stage last year that BYU’s Zac Blair won medalist honors and advanced to the U.S. Open which kick-started his success on this year’s PGA Tour.

Riverside Country Club’s teaching pro, Matt Baird, shot a 67 to earn the third qualifying spot, and Kyle Chappell survived a four man playoff to win the fourth and final spot in the Sectional Qualifying. Kyle shot 68, along with Randall McCracken, Jordan Rodgers, and Christopher Peterson. The playoff went four holes before Chappell earned the final spot.

One shot shy of success with 69s were Hayden Banz, Jordan Rodgers, and Christopher Peterson. Hayden Banz is Austin's younger brother.

Rasmussen shot a bogey free round with three birdies each side. Banz had one bogey and seven birdies, four of them on the back nine where he shot 32. Rasmussen is being recruited by numerous colleges and is currently uncommitted. Banz, who played as a freshman at BYU this past year, is headed on an LDS Mission in July.

Chappell went into the four-way playoff kicking himself for being there. He started his round with an eagle on the fourth hole and birdied three of the next four holes and made the turn with a 31. He made a birdie on 14 and was coasting to a qualifying spot until he double bogeyed the 18th hole that forced him into a playoff for the final spot.
