Utah State Heads To Tucson For 2015 Mountain West Golf Championships

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State's men's golf team will travel to Tucson, Ariz., this weekend to compete in the 2015 Mountain West Championship set to begin on Friday, May 1.

 

All 11 Mountain West teams will play a total of 54 holes during the three-day tournament with the first round scheduled to begin on Friday, May 1 at 7 a.m. (PT). The tournament, which runs through Sunday, May 3, will be played on the par 71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort.

 

Scheduled to compete for the Aggies will be seniors Grahm Schmaltz and Zach Waxler, junior Seokwon Jeon, and sophomores Eli Rogers and McCoy Willey.

 

Utah State, who is paired with Fresno State and Nevada, will tee off beginning at 8:40 a.m. (PT).

 

New Mexico won the 2014 Mountain West Championship with a 6-under 846 (279-281-286), while the Lobos Gavin Green took medalist honors with a 4-under 209 (70-69-70).

 

On the season, Utah State has competed in nine tournaments and has recorded eight top-10 finishes, including three top-five places. USU began its year by winning the Weber State hosted Battle in the Tetons last fall. Utah State began its spring season by finishing fifth at the Southern Utah-hosted pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational and most recently finished seventh at the BYU-hosted PING Cougar Classic.

 

Schmaltz leads Utah State with a stroke average of 72.50 over 22 rounds this year, while Jeon has a stroke average of 72.68, also over 22 rounds. Willey has a stroke average of 73.95 over 22 rounds on the season, Rogers has a stroke average of 75.09 over 11 rounds, and Waxler has a stroke average of 75.58 over 19 rounds.

 

At last year’s Mountain West Championships, Utah State finished in ninth-place with a 33-over 885 (298-295-292) as Platke tied for 27th with an 8-over 221 (75-69-77), Schmaltz tied for 33rd with a 10-over 223 (74-77-72) and Jeon tied for 38th with a 12-over 225 (73-76-76).
