Dixie State Wins PacWest Conference Men’s Golf Title

Dixie State College hosted the PacWest Conference men’s golf championship at Sunbrook Golf Course this past week and “Home, Sweet, Home” the Red Storm won the championship by two shots over Dominican. Dixie’s top player, Kenny You, faced a four-foot pressure putt on the final hole which he and the anxious gallery thought he had to make for a team tie for first place. He made the putt, but after a scorecard miscalculation was corrected the final tally shows a two-stroke victory margin for the Red Storm.

Kenny You and Mark Milton of Dominican shared medalist honors with three round totals of 217. Although Cody Wass had a rough outing Monday with a non-counting 83, he bounced back with scores of 71-72 to help Dixie to the title.

After finishing second last year, DSU coach Brad Sutterfield was all smiles after his team battled their way back to victory to edge Dominican by one team shot.

“I haven't felt those kind of nerves in a long, long time,” Sutterfield said about You's final putt. “Kenny came through once again for us and I can't say enough about the way our guys kept battling. I'm very proud of all of them.”

“Dominican played great and it was tough to see it end the way that it did. I have a lot of respect for them. They are a class act,” Sutterfield added.

Cal Baptist's Kavan Eubank won the individual title after finishing 3-under par. Eubank came from behind to take the title with a 6-under 66 on Wednesday.

Dixie State totaled 877 for its three rounds, edging Dominican's 879 while BYU-Hawaii and Cal Baptist tied for third place at 899.

You finished with a 75 in the final round, his highest total of the tournament but made the big putt when he needed to and finished tied for second individually.

“Kenny didn't have his best game today but gutted it out like I have never seen before,” Sutterfield said. “He never quits.”

“Cody also made some incredible shots today that were absolutely critical for our team,” Sutterfield said. “When you get a performance like that it's huge.”

Dixie State awaits the NCAA West Regionals now, coming up in May.
